Recovery after eyelid surgery is usually measured in stages rather than one exact finish line. Swelling, bruising, tightness, tearing, and asymmetry can shift during the first days and weeks. A realistic plan makes healing less stressful and helps patients know when to call.

Instructions vary by procedure and patient. Upper blepharoplasty, ptosis repair, lower blepharoplasty, brow surgery, reconstruction, and eyelid position repair do not all heal the same way.

The first few days

Patients are commonly advised to rest, keep the head elevated, use cold compresses as directed, avoid strenuous activity, and take medications exactly as prescribed. Vision may be temporarily blurred from ointment or swelling. Bruising can move downward with gravity. Mild bloody spotting can occur early, but increasing pain, sudden vision change, or rapidly expanding swelling should be reported urgently.

A responsible adult should drive the patient home after surgery. Many patients also appreciate help with meals, pets, errands, and medication timing during the first day or two.

The first couple of weeks

Bruising and swelling usually improve gradually, but the eyelids may not look final. Incisions can feel firm, pink, itchy, or slightly uneven while healing. Follow-up visits are used to check eyelid position, eye surface comfort, incision healing, and whether activity restrictions can be adjusted.

Patients should ask when to resume exercise, makeup, contact lenses, swimming, golf, pickleball, yard work, and work travel. These answers can differ based on the procedure and healing pattern.

Eye comfort matters

Dryness, tearing, light sensitivity, and foreign body sensation can happen during healing because eyelid swelling changes blinking and tear distribution. Patients with pre-existing dry eye, thyroid eye disease, contact lens wear, or previous eye surgery should discuss this before surgery so the postoperative plan is realistic.

Recovery varies by procedure

Upper blepharoplasty recovery is not identical to ptosis repair, lower blepharoplasty, brow lift, or reconstructive eyelid surgery. Lower eyelid procedures may involve more attention to swelling and lid support. Ptosis repair may require time for eyelid height to settle. Reconstructive repairs may have wound-specific instructions.
